Most common Magnolia, fairly vigorous. Large shrub or multi-stemmed tree with a broad, oval crown. Can grow as wide as it does high. Blooms in April-May before the leaves form, with large, white with lilac-pink tulip-shaped flowers. Spectacular but short flowering period.

Colloquially incorrectly called 'tulip tree'. The real tulip tree is the Liriodendron. Magnolias grow best in lime-poor, fresh, permeable, humus-rich soil, in a sunny, sheltered location. Does not grow well in dry soil. Does not tolerate lime-rich soil.
