This cultivar grows slightly less tall than Liquidambar styraciflua. It is a selection with a beautiful dark wine-red autumn colour. The crown is broadly pyramidal. 'Lane Roberts' also carries corky ridges on the branches. The young twigs are light green. In April-May, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers appear from which round spiky capsule fruits develop, 3 centimetres long and remaining on the tree until winter. Like all Liquidambar, it prefers a fertile, loamy and moist soil.
