The habit of this cultivar is rather narrow upright. It is a densely branched shrub, reaching about 4 to 5 meters in height. The leaves are 3-6 inches long, 3-4 inches wide and resemble the species, but are more corrugated and coarser toothed and more balanced in shape. The shiny leaves are very dark green and very prickly. 'Alaska' is a female cultivar and thus bears berries. 'Alaska' is an interesting cultivar because of the very good winter hardiness combined with a rich fruit bearing. For good fruit set, a male plant must be planted nearby. Suitable for dense hedges, which should not be too wide.

Holly grows in full sun, partial shade and shade, but requires a sufficiently moist, humus-rich soil. They do not like lime soil. Very wet soils are not suitable for holly.
Holly is very easy to cut and can be used as a solitary, in groups and as a hedge. Even the Romans already used holly to plant impenetrable hedges.
