This shrub has 15 cm wide, richly flowering inflorescences consisting of sterile flowers. The name can cause some confusion. In a neutral soil, the flower colour tends more towards soft purple than pink. In a more acidic soil, the colour is purple. At the end of the flowering season, the thin stems bend. This gives the plant an old-fashioned charm. The matt, elongated leaves are light green in colour. One of the most winter-hardy Hydrangea macrophylla's.

All Hydrangeas require a sufficiently humus-rich, moist soil. They prefer to grow in light shade. In full sun, the leaves can droop.
