Tall tree with slender, columnar crown and upright growing branches, branching from the base of the trunk. Slow growing, a mature specimen can reach 3 metres in width. Slower growing than the green and yellow form. The oval leaves are deep purple throughout the growing season. Later, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in May, followed by beechnuts. Does not grow on wet soils or soils with a fluctuating water table. Best planted on a well-drained, humus-rich soil.
