High, multi-stemmed shrub or standard tree with almost round, bronze-coloured emerging leaves that appear early in spring. Later in summer they are bluish green, turning golden yellow or orange in autumn, 6 cm long. The autumn leaves smell of cinnamon. The young twigs are reddish brown. The small carmine red flowers appear in April just before the leaves. Not to be confused with Cercis. Prefers a not too dry, nutritious soil.
